The book is a biography and history of the life and reign of Nero, Emperor of the Roman Empire. Nero was born on December 15, 37 CE and, following the death Claudius on October 13, 54 CE, Nero was immediately hailed as his successor, with the Senate unanimously voting in his favor. Nero was only 16 years old. It may seem easy to write Nero off as a diabolical dictator.The difficulty in chronicling Nero's life is that most accounts of his life and history came several years after the fact. Furthermore, most sources are prejudiced and one-sided against the emperor. He was the Antichrist for Christians and a despicable despot for the nobility, but is this the whole story? While many Roman scholars painted Nero as a complete monster with no good qualities whatsoever, this apparently was not the whole story. Numerous sources indicate that his policy of “bread and sport” brought him adoration from the common people of Rome. A Greek historian of the time wrote that many of the common people of Rome were sad to see Nero go, and some even refused to accept that he was dead. This book makes it clear there was more to Nero's life, than that of a cartoon badman.
